Formsprag Model FSO-500 Overrunning Clutch for Water Plume Ride
A popular theme park located in Ohio needed a replacement overrunning clutch for
use on one of its water plume rides
The attraction features a series of 16 ft. long
boats carrying 20 passengers each up a 35 ft. lift before rapidly plunging into a
splash pool below.
Positioned on the boat lift conveyor drive train at the base of the climb, the clutch
prevents potentially dangerous reverse rotation of the conveyor in case of a power
outage. The problem was that the existing clutch was failing due to seal problems
within the water environment.
Formsprag's Overrunning Clutch Solution
In response, Formsprag provided an upgraded replacement FSO-500 clutch. The
new clutch featured nickel plating to fight corrosion due to chemicals in the water.
Also, a food-grade grease was substituted to eliminate any oil lubrication from being
introduced to the water that splashes onto the riders.
The 4.75” diameter grease-lubricated FSO-500 clutch has a 1,175 lb.ft.
(1,598 Nm) torque capacity. All FSO automatic backstopping clutches feature a
high torque density and require no adjustments or controls.
